Bloom

3 May 2024

By Ramona Seeley

It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.

Mark 4:31–32

I was walking past an abandoned house and was reminded of an old saying, “Bloom where you are planted.” At first, all I saw in the unkempt yard were tall weeds. Then something bright caught my eye. In the middle of the yard was a bed of tulips. Even though they were shorter than the weeds, the drabness around them could not shade their brightness. The tulips did not let their surroundings limit their ability to bless the observant passerby. They fulfilled their purpose in creation.

Sometimes we feel limited because of conditions over which we have no control. We feel there is nothing we can do, nothing for which to hope. We look to the scriptures and find a passage that tells us to let our light shine wherever we are and bring our own beauty into the world.

Of all new service which I have begun,
Oh, Lord, I pray your will be done.
Let my life shine to everyone.
Hear me, dear Lord, and Beloved Son.

Prayer Phrase

“What can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Spiritual Practice

Breathe Hope

Find a quiet space where you can sit without distractions. Light a candle. Take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to relax with each exhale. As you breathe, let go of any tension or worries you may be holding onto. Take notice of the way the flame dances and flickers, casting light and shadow in the room. As you observe the flame, imagine it symbolizing the spark of hope within you. With each breath, imagine the flame growing brighter and stronger. Visualize this light spreading throughout your body, filling you with a sense of hope and positivity. Take a moment to express gratitude for the blessings in your life, no matter how small they may seem.
